TURRUK

The large, carved ancestor stone located located on the northern bank of the Yarra River, Birrarung Marr

Turruk is an immersive learning experience designed for communities and workplaces to deepen their understanding of cultural intelligence through fostering respectful relationships with First Peoples.

Uncle Shanes’s artwork was incorporated into the learning modules.

A program of Initiatives of Change Australia, Turruk is deeply rooted in honouring the wisdom and resilience of Australia’s Indigenous peoples and communities. Participants engage in culturally safe yarning circles and workshops for critical and creative reflection, guided by diverse First Nations perspectives. Truth-telling about the past and present is paired with deep listening, fostering transformation and purposeful action. During Covid, the program adapted to comply with restrictions, integrating an in-person experience into an online format. This included building interactive maps, shooting footage of various landmarks and creating opening and closing graphics to offer online participants a fully immersive and educational experience.

Footage captured of Uncle Shane Charles, a proud Yorta Yorta, Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung man.
